Develop, Shape and Grow into Destiny

Character Formation

Character formation refers to the intentional process of developing the inner life of a person—shaping their thoughts, desires, habits, and actions in ways that lead to maturity, stability, and integrity according to Biblically understood Christian values. While many approaches to psychotherapy focus primarily on symptom reduction, character formation goes deeper by addressing the

kind of person one is becoming.

It asks not only “How do I feel better?” but also:

  • Who am I becoming, and what governs my life?”
  •  “Am I becoming more Christ-like?”

  • “Am I striving to step into the fullness of my destiny?”

Scripture teaches that lasting change is not merely external or behavioural, but involves the renewal of the mind and the reorientation of the heart (Romans 12:2).

From this perspective, character is not self-created in isolation, but formed through a process that includes personal responsibility, intentional practice, and the sanctifying work of The Holy Spirit.

A central biblical framework for character formation is found in Galatians 5:22–23, which describes the “fruit of the Spirit.” These qualities—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—provide primary traits of a mature Christian character. In addition, the Bible teaches us we should be courageous, purpose-driven, and pursue wisdom.

Practically, this process includes studying God’s Word to see what He has to say about our areas of character struggle and formation and praying for His Spirit’s supernatural intervention to help us become more like Jesus. Then, we set specific goals for growth, and develop structured practices that reinforce new patterns.

HOW WE CAN HELP

In my approach, character formation involves helping individuals identify their lives in light of Scripture: their values, goals, habits, and sources of joy. We prayerfully consider the fruits of the Spirit and where God is calling you to grow, and develop a tailored plan with accountability to help you get there.
